About our swim program

                                                           WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

Many families and swimmers join SUNFISH for our reputation of combining technical training, athletic conditioning and competitive development in a fun inclusive environment.

We focus on the fundamentals of the 4 main strokes with repetitive drills on: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Swimming laps ie. 25 meters, 50 meters, 100 meters (dependent on skill level) builds endurance and allows practice of their stroke.

We encourage strong technique to reduce fatigue but we also know kids are motivated by fun and personal incentives, so our coaches try to incorporate fun activities as well as pushes each swimmer to beat their personal best times.

Many families stay with Sunfish because of the culture the Club has brought to their families - the development of friendships for both children and their parents within the Club and across other Clubs, the many social activities we offer, and the 3 disciplines we offer (swimming, water polo, artistic swimming). We offer a true Club experience for all our members.

Our competitive season is the summer, May to August. We train with dedication through the week and we test new skills and improved speed on the weekends at swim meets. We also hang out with our friends and we are surrounded by many Sunfish families.

In the fall and winter, September to April, we train one to two hours per week and work on developing technical skills and building endurance. During this time, we also welcome new members who are ready for technical and endurance advancement. Training once or twice a week, is enough to keep our members conditioned and still have time to dedicate to other sports or school activities.

MINIMUM ABILITY
There is generally no minimum skill, however, we have a development and competitive program and higher ability is very helpful.  We are a non-profit organization with the ability to hire few coaches and be supported by volunteer coaches. Thus, the assessment is to assess the swimmer's fitness and ability to follow and apply coaching instructions within training groups.

As volunteer coaches are sporadic, we do require all new younger swimmers to be able to stay in the pool throughout their session, be comfortable in the water and be able to use a kick board for 15 meters with minimal support.
